This canvas was inspired by a visit to the Museum of Modern Art in New York during the ‘Painting For Freedom Project’ in 2010. The museum was so busy, as if it were Disneyland. At that time there was a retrospective of the American abstract expressionists Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman etc. There were so many visitors, perhaps 100 times more people than works of art. The madness and commercialization of this period of American art history stirred up the rebel in me. Struggling with the white canvas late at night in my studio in the Navy Yard, I decided to let go of everything and to throw paint on the canvas with great intensity. That moment sparked a new period, one more abstract and daring than before, of creating new shapes, surfaces and colours.
